UMPIRE DEVELOPMENT
We are committed to developing well-trained and well-supported umpires for the game in the South West who enjoy their role and are appreciated by players, coaches and spectators.
We can offer small group umpiring workshops to schools, universities and clubs to help with individual development - understanding and interpretation of the rules, field positioning, use of the whistle, foul set-ups, teamwork on and off the pitch and so on. Please contact our Lead Umpire, Annabel Campbell if you or your organisation would like to take advantage of this service and she can discuss the how, when and where with you.
SWL also offers financial support towards Umpiring Courses (usually 50% of the course fee - paid on successful completion). The application form can be found here.
All courses are run by England Lacrosse and can be accessed here. Entry Level is an online only course and whenever possible we offer on-pitch guidance and advice to any newly qualified umpire. This is often at our Senior League tournament events. If you would like some mentoring, or even just some extra practice, contact our Senior League Administrator Becca Kellagher on sl.southwestlacrosseuk@gmail.com. Domestic level 1 (D1) requires attendance at two online webinar courses followed by on-pitch assessment. If you have done your D1/2 course and feel you are ready for assessment, or perhaps would like some on-pitch advice, don't hesitate to contact our Annabel, on umpiring.southwestlacrosseuk@gmail.com who will make suitable arrangements. D3 is the highest level run by the domestic game and again requires completion of a course and 3 successful assessments.
All umpires must be EL registered and their officiating status maintained as 'current' to be able to umpire at any SWL fixture or event. You can do this by completing the Annual Rules Test (even if you have just completed a course!) which ensures you are keeping up to date with the current rules. It is free and accessed online through your ELSport:80 profile. If you are umpiring matches for U18s, you must also complete the EL Safeguarding course (free online) and obtain a DBS certificate.
And finally, you can keep in touch with lots of umpiring opportunities around the region by joining our dedicated umpiring facebook group SW Womens Lacrosse Umpiring and by joining the Active Umpires initiative - contact Annabel Campbell for more details!
